After many attempts I've finally got to grips with helos.
From an article on the Hover control site:

1)All sensitivities to maximum
2)Very small (if any) null zone
3)all realism settings to maximum EXEPT general realism, backed off
ONE MOUSE CLICK only.

Worked for me like a dream.

No translation, it's all in Russian, which is fair enough for a Russian plane. The manual is really quite short though, as there's not much to say. To get in the air I used my usual approach to Russian planes of turning on every switch (we'll worry about the correct order later!!!).
