Re: The Mekon Lives!
Too right, Leif :) It is Black Rod's job to carry the Mace, but it seems it is often delegated to the Serjeant-At-Arms. As far as I can see, the only current female Usher of the B.R. is in the Oz Senate, but the mace bearer in the pic looks nothing like her, and it doesn't look like our Mace, either...

Re: Getting your back up!
I used to have one of those, but I've had a GPS these last few years - and I can switch it off when it gets it wrong and starts sulking because I won't go the way it said !
Cheers

Too right, Ben !
They won't believe a computer in any other context, but if a GPS says 'turn right' they will drive down a railway line.
So ban these idiots for good, then they won't be taking up space on the road when I want to use it

Re: to add an external hard drive or not... that is the question
External drives are meant for long-term bulk storage, out-of-hours backups, and the like. Transfer rates are very slow, because rapid access doesn't matter much in those contexts. I would forget disk drives altogether. Save your pennies and go for a solid state drive - I see these are now up to 32GB...

Re: Navaid Theory
Skip, Chris, Nigel - I have before me a UK AIP chart for Coll (EGEL) aerodrome, dated 12 Jun 08. In the top left corner it says: "GUND(Geoid Undulation) = The height of the Geoid (MSL) above the Reference Elipsoid (WGS 84) at the stated position." (Yes, they really only used one 'l' in 'el...

Re: Navaid Theory
A good point, Skip, and I should have phrased it better. To get an accurate position fix in 2D navigation, you want a good wide 'cut' between the sun line and the star lines. All the GPS satellites are in the same orbit, so it is difficult to get a good wide angle or three, to calculate altitude. Th...
