Not sure Brian but I thought is was a play on words to do with coffins and the name .
Bad handling at altitude or something at first??

Wasn't the Meteors used for transporting "illegal" persons during WW2?
I know that there were several transports from Denmark to England both Jews and Danes ... Jews for obvious reasons. and some Danes that joined the RAF.
Unfortunately not all survived the very cold trip in the wheel wells ... so that might be the reason?

I know of Mosquito's carrying passengers in the Bombay..BOAC did that.

Found this...
During the first few flights I was taught how to handle the aircraft and it’s
engines, how to use the airbrakes, which were new to me since none of the aircraft I
had flown up to then had this facility. I was also taught how to fly with one engine
shut down or ‘flamed out’ to use the correct terminology and, very importantly, not to
use the airbrakes when flying with asymmetric power. The reason for the latter was to
avoid the so-called ‘Phantom Dive’, which was caused by having too low a speed
with a large amount of rudder input towards the live engine. Doing this caused the
aircraft to flip on its back and dive into the ground. Many Meteor pilots were killed in
this way, giving rise to the aircraft’s nickname of ‘Meatbox’.

Also this:
A total of 890 Meteors were lost in service with the RAF (145 crashes in 1953 alone)
resulting in the death of 450 pilots.

"Meatbox" = in the early days no, repeat no, ejection seats in quite a few Meteors. ATC cadets were not put off and some were given Air Experience flights in 'hard seat' Meteor T7s wearing leather helmets - no bonedomes in those days. Parachutes were issued and worn to act as seat cushions, not to save lives!!
Peter may have flown in Meteor T7s without ejection seats prior to transferring to Venoms.
