Thanks for the glimpses of heaven Ben!

Now, did anyone else notice the difference in the wakes also...?? *-)

Again, I sincerely hope people don't mind me pointing these little things out... I just think with these two absolute gems workin' together "the whole will be [even] greater than the sum of the parts"...

Ahhhhh! 8)

This may sound like "guilding the lilly" (and what a lilly!), but might Rick be willing to use burnt-in shading on Glamorgan (assuming she is 3DS Max)? I'll hazard a guess she'd then have the same 3D look as Fearless, and it might darken the greys.

But then, as Dave said, we don't want to hamper progress on the Jetstream ;)

Discuss!

Well..

How long's a piece of string

I've just gone through some shots I took in Pompey and RGB'd em in Photoshop to see what variations I could get. The colour off Daves chart looks very similar to how the colour looks in shade but as soon as light hits it, you're looking toward pure white in some cases and I didn't go for those bits! Here are a selection..

Intrepid/Fearless - neutral but in sunlight - 176, 173, 166
Ark Royal - shade/out of direct sunlight - 130, 139, 144
Mine Hunter 'unknown' - side/direct sunlight - 233, 231, 219
Mine Hunter 'unknown' - Bow/direct sunlight - 219, 216, 207
Bristol - side/direct sunlight - 221, 220, 215
Bristol - Bow/natural shade from bow shape - 181, 181, 179
Bristol - Stern/direct sunlight - 207, 204, 199

None of the points taken indicating direct sunlight were parts that were highlighted by the sun but what the above DOES highlight is that the inboard or in shade colours are vastly different from the lit side.. nothing odd here but as the colours are all the same, they do look a lot different (it makes sense to me anyway)

To highlight how the 'correct' colour (160,176,176) sits in the grand scale of things and how ships look in real life, here is an example of that colour dotted 5 times on a modern destroyer.. Destroyer

Yes mate.. the very closest being no.5 (though there are a few around no.5 that I didn't number). The thing is.. when you see ALL of those ships together in natural light, bright sunlight or shade, they ALL look the same colour. Flightsim.. not even the 'mighty' FSX shades as well as folk think and this is where 'real' colours, while a great reference, do not really display correctly. Where I found a close match off HMS York to the correct RGB, you know yourself that the FSX Fearless/Intrepid look much darker in the sim. I think the old addage must be.. if it looks right, it IS right even if we know the actual colour used is some way off the correct colour ;)

IRL they can look very dark grey to almost white with a sqaul cloud behind and strong sunlight straight on it.

Depending on season, time of day and weather.....plus ageing of paint.......gives a variety of choices.

I seen many and they never seem to stay the same colour throughout the day :worried:

Yet it does have to be near enough right or it won't behave in the varying conditions properly *-)

It's a bit of a :wall: :wall: :wall:
