Detecting incoming aircraft from the sound. Made very obsolete by the invention of radar.

Two Russians in 1917 listening out for aircraft.
I think the Russians were slightly ahead of that picture of yours Dale, they have theirs on a mobile detection rather than static!!
If I came across them at night I would run like a frightened chicken!
