Think I might have another go, not going to be beaten............Just yet!! :worried:

Chris, if you can give an example of where all the config files for Ortho go i.e. in what order that would be great.

Hi Guys, re next steps...

The OrthoXP process creates self contained scenery areas that typically contain photo images, mesh, water masks and an overlay. There's nothing more you need do with them except to add each area to the "scenery_packs" file in your Custom Scenery folder in XP. The OrthoXP areas sit below all other entries. I put my Ortho scenery folders in a large capacity HD and then do a symbolic link to my XP Custom Scenery folder.

As for the order within the scenery_packs file, as long as they are below other custom scenery such as ORBX etc it doesn't matter which order they are in. I tend to put mine in number order for ease of reference but that's it.

12 hours later, 29 tiles with ARC maps at zoom level 16 were done, ranging between 1gb and 3gb in size. I adjusted the scenery_packs.ini file and went into X-Plane.

The scenery looked utterly crap at ground level but pretty good in the air. There was no night lighting however. I then installed X-Europe V5 and adjusted the ini file again. I also use HD Mesh V4.
It reads as follows:

Night lighting is now present and the scenery looks good... not Orbx good, but good. I'm unsure as to whether I'm seeing Ortho scenery or X-Europe scenery though.

Hi Chris, from memory when I ran Ortho4XP my tiles were at 17 which gives a better view even when flying low, I'm sure that Chris will confirm what you are seeing is with 3D buildings i.e. remain visually when really low down are those of X Europe V5 the Ortho Scenery tends to flatten out when really low i.e. on the ground but again, Chris will confirm if I am right.

Thanks for putting in your cfg have not yet had the time to start building tiles yet.

Regards
Nigel.

Yes, anything still standing when at ground level is X Europe v5, which is generally very good for Europe as a whole. Does anyone know if there's a similar utility for elsewhere in the world? I use ZL17 - I have the space - but it takes longer to build the tiles. I did a 20 hour run earlier (or at least the PC did, I was probably snoring for at least some of that time) for 24 tiles covering quite a bit of France and in to NE Spain.

So would I be right in saying it's pointless using Ortho bits if you have X-Europe?

Hi Chris, the short answer appears to be - you don't need to build overlays using Ortho4XP if you are also using X-Europe but there are some possible exceptions for the fringes of Europe. For a longer explanation please see here: https://forums.x-plane.org/index.php?/f ... -question/

Hope that helps. For what it's worth I include Ortho4XP overlays and haven't noted any anomalies so far.

I decided to remove the Ortho folders from XP, leaving just the X-Europe bits and it looked like usual XP scenery with accurate roads and buildings. The Ortho went straight back and it was far superior.
I'm not overly fussed about high resolution tiles so set the PC to work and have so far gone with this...

Quite an area you have covered Chris would there be any chance of a couple of screen shots just to see what it is like in the lower tiles assuming that they are zoom level 16?

Many thanks in advance

Nigel.

I see you have the same scenery hole I have with FL17. I have a similar map except I've covered all of Italy and North through western Austria, Germany and all of Switzerland Belguim, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. I've also covered the Pyrenees and North Eastern Spain down to Valencia.

I think I'm going to stop now. I think MSFS 2020 will satisfy the urge for realism without the work. It's very likely I'll be keeping X-Plane but ditching P3D.
