Question re Rick's HS780 Andover....

Post by Grayson Ottaway »

This is from the Manual for Rick's stunning HS780 Andover ...

> For convenience, with the throttles closed to idle, selection of the REVERSE position on the FFPS (Flight Fine Pitch Stop) Lever will automatically remove the GFP Stop allowing the blades to go into reverse pitch and advance the throttles to 10500 RPM

Having flown the Andover heaps - I absolutely love it!! - it doesn't seem to happen, meaning I have to manually move the lever, causing a longer than I'd like landing roll. (When you're trying to land at Lukla, Nepal, it makes things interesting! :worried: )

Any thoughts anyone??

Check your throttle calibration. Zero is often not-quite-zero, but not-quite-zero is not zero enough...

If you see what I mean..? :k:

Grayson,
I think you'll find there is no actual reverse, it simply refers to the braking affect that occurs when the props come below the FFPS to ground range,
normally you need to use F2 as you would to select reverse thrust, the RPM will increase due to the finer prop pitch and acts a very effective braking system.

Hope that helps?
Robbie.

The HS.780 did have fully reversing props...the only Darts as far as I am aware of that did.

They could be reversed in the air just before landing to shorten the run in tactical conditions

The Fokker F27 Mk500 and Mk600 had fully reversing Darts as did most of the Convair CV-640s. A few of the CV-600s had them, but only after an engine change.

Sounds like LOTS of fun!

Can you do that in FS? I seem to remember an effect like that with Rick's Vanguard at one time, but could be wrong.

Maybe the Fairchild FH-227 did, but none of the Fokker 27's I worked on did;

Its' called 'flight beta'; C130,PC6 Porter & Dash 8-300 for example can do it, its' not full blade reverse (for obvious reasons) but a 'low blade angle' or prop pitch setting, usually @ 5 degrees, that when coupled with the forward motion of the plane gives a resultant thrust vector in the negative

FSD's PC6 Porter does, and you can try it on others by press and hold F2
button, but you want a fairly steep descent angle to keep the speed manageable.

Garry is correct, the HS780 was the only model fitted with reversible props, no F.27's Fokker or otherwise did, minimum blade angle is 0' on all but 780.

Reversable props HS780

Post by Scorpius »

I can confirm that the Andover had reversable props selectable in the air, but only actuated when the undercarriage microswitches sensed weight , i.e the aircraft had touched down.

Must have had too much time looking after them at Thorney Island!
