Period scenery and aircraft on a disc?

Post by Grace Quirrel »

Hi guys, this is my first posting having just discovered you. What a great site and forum. I feel like I have left the wilderness and finally found a warm, friendly new home! So much to read about, I doubt I shall do any work for the rest of the week.

I can't see that this has been suggested before, but how feasible would it be for one of you to create period airport scenery (60s / 70s) for FS9 and sell it on a dvd?

There are lots of separate pieces of freeware from avsim and flightsim.com but downloading them all individually, unzipping them, then trying to get FS9 to recognise them in the Scenery Library is a nightmare - for me anyway (I recently downloaded an add-on for Khartoum in the 1960s and still can't get the bl**dy thing to load). I'm desperate to fly the Maltby VC10 out of a 1960s Heathrow and through a 1960s Rome and onto a 1960s Athens and end up at a 1960s Cairo!!

How great would it be to have dozens of period airports on one dvd, along with period AI and static aircraft, that you just load onto the PC? I'd certainly be willing to pay handsomely for it!

Is it feasible Any other thoughts or suggestions?
Grace

PS I'll bet one of you is going to say such a thing already exisist and I will look a complete twonk

Hi Grace and welcome to the forum :)

A full set (whatever that might be) of 'Period' 60's/70's is something we'd all applaud and while such an undertaking as you suggest is far from impossible.. it is daunting to say the least :o Just look how long it's taken Gary Summons to knock up his UK2000 collection (7 years) and this doesn't yet cover Scotland (although the latter has been done by another developer). There are folk out there beavering away at this sort of scenery (free too!) and we are eternally grateful for their work ;-)

It's a great idea but one I fear we'll never see :-(

HI Grace

Welcome aboard

As Dave mentions it is a huge task and not something we are likely to any time soon if at all :-(

Perhaps in the future, if things settle down so that work can be carried through into the next sim and perhaps better creation tools that make it easier and quicker to build become wideley used.........stuff may accumalate.

But sadly as things as now...........it won't happen.

http://www.calclassic.com/scenery.htm
They have about 20 airports from the late 50s to early 60s including Speke, LHR and plenty more European ones. They also have a page of instructions on how to install the scenery.

Dave and Garry - v kind, thanks.

calypsos - that's a great link. I'll give it a go. If only I had an ever-so-slightly larger brain I'd find it easier to download and install this stuff.

Just try one (maybe LHR) if you have problems, I am sure we can sort them out. Once you have done one or two, you will adding sceneries all over the place :cpu:

Hi Grace and welcome to the Forum, don't worry about work, what you really have to worry about is the lack of time you find to fly when here!!
