Moving Aircraft Carriers in FSX!

Post by Trev Clark »

Moving carriers (driveable in MP) are now a reality, see AVSIM rdg_nimitz_carrier.zip, I wonder if the clever ones here can take a look at how it is done to try and get HMS Ark Royal into this type of configuration?

Moving Carrier have always been possible in FSX Trev using AI routes. I have one such model for testing. ;-)

To be honest there isn't much point in developing the carriers further until the new exspansion pack comes out complete with the new SDK which promises much more for carriers and other shipping. :yipeee:

Moving Carriers (eg.. driveable ones) have been a reality in FS9 for a long time too. Only downside with them is that they weren't/aren't landable :-(

Hi guys, I should have mentioned that the one in the link is 'landable' as well as 'driveable'.

I recompiled the old Alpha Hermes as a landable AI ship for Ben a while back. :)

Well, it rocks and rolls on the waves and is fully driveable (but no VC that I can find to watch the goings on), I almost got a little sea sick looking out at the shore line! Landings should be fun, but without trapping wires, I think fast jets are out!

DG's recompiled Alpha Hermes is grand. As long as someone is prepared to captain the ship... everyone else can use her to land on in a multiplayer situation. The snag comes is that you cannot currently use the maned ships as AI without modifying the cfg's etc, and AI ships (as with AI aircraft) aren't available in a MP situation... which is a shame.

Their is also "AI Carrier Battle Groups" (aicarri1.zip) available on FlightSim.com created by LC0277 using the default FSX Carrier, Cruiser and Destroyer. On LC0277's own webpage (http://lc0277.nerim.net) he describes how to make these (and other) SimObjects into AI watercraft. Included is a Google Earth KML file so you can easily find all the locations around the world where they are sailing. I personally like to go find them sailing around the Isle of Wight. RNAS Lee-on-Solent is a great place to set out from. I find Missimo Taccoli's Cessna L-19D (O-1D) Bird Dog or AlphaSim's DHC-2 Beaver are the best for landing aboard without any arrester gear. I would TOTALLY be up for some MP flying circuits around the carrier if others are interested...?? :)
