Help needed on avro hs748 autopilot

Post by mapez »

Hi there friends !!!!
Im a great admirer of Hawker-Siddeley avro HS.748 series 2A plane , thanks to Rick Piper & team for the excellent work they did.
I really would appreciate if someone could help me with the operation of the autopilot, I fail to make it work, sure is my lack of knowledge. Is there any manual to explain it in detail ? Are you there David Maltby ?
I really want to enjoy it fully !!!
thanks in advance for the help you can give me !!!
Best Regards !!
Mapez.

I'm here Mapez! (at the moment)

It's roughly the same A/P as in the Comet, so have a look through this.
http://www.dmflightsim.co.uk/html/Comet/Manual_AP.htm

There's a few layout differences, but all the same bits are on there.
I can't remember if the official release version of the 748 has an active Airspeed hold function. May have been the Viscount where it was deactivated for accuracy.
And you'll want to select NAV1 or NAV2 on the SFS selector (think that's the same on 748). There's a brief description of that here...
http://www.dmflightsim.co.uk/html/Comet ... CENTRE.htm
And the 748 model doesn't need the 45 second warm up.

Hi Mapez and welcome,

The HS 748 manual is in the "FSDS3 HS.748" folder in the "aircraft" folder of FS9 or the "SimObjects/Airplanes" folder of FSX.

If you're new to this aircraft make sure you read the parts about de-icing as well or bad things can happen. 0:)

Hello again David. I think I have an AP issue here!!. I read both manuals, the one you gave me on the link and the HS 748 series 2A cockpit manual by Fraser a. Mckay, but I can not even make it work. I take off, power switch on, engage on,holds the current pitch attitude, so far so good, but when I active the beam coupling switch or glide coupling switch both are turned off by itselves or give me erratic directions. The one that works is the alter heading button which I use to navigate, so I can not catch a VOR course or Radial. Very frustrating. Could you send me to my mail a copy of both HS 748.air and Aircraft.cfg files , in order to crosscheck with those that I have, to see if everything is OK ? .Any other ideas or help will be greatly appreciated. I really love this airplane !!!!!.
Best Regards
Mapez

Are you loading a default aircraft first??

If not, that can cause things, to not work properly *-)

Hi Mapez

I've just had a go with the 748 & it took me a while to get NAV lock to follow a VOR (I never use NAV lock).
But it did work for me.

Tune the VOR in on NAV1.
Make sure the CDI (circled in red below) is using NAV1. Clicking the middle of the CDI changes between NAV1 & NAV2.
You need to set the required course on the CDI using the knob bottom right. That should bring the vertical beam line near to centre. If the CDI beam is well off centre, engaging NAV lock can send you round in circles as it tries to lock on.
Autopilot POWER On, ENGAGE On, BEAM On and that should do it.
