A little anecdote:

Once when I was in Shetland the newspaper flight came in on the short runway but ran off the end, across the road and settled nose-down on the rocks between there and the sea. All you could see from the road was its tail. For the islanders it was a national disaster - no concern shown for the pilot but they were worried about not getting their daily papers!
