FSACOF - reborn!

A little while back I posted on here about not being able to get FS9 loaded on my Windows7 desktop or Windows10 laptop and in the end more or less gave up despite a number of much appreciated offers of help. However I have an old Vista desktop with FS9 on and to cut a long story short have been able to copy it lock stock and barrel onto the desktop and eureka! It works! So now I have my favourite SIM and can start flying the classics again!

Until someone finds a way of flying MSFS as though it was somewhere between 1955 and 1990 I'm very happy to pick up where I left off about 6 years ago but would appreciate any suggestions or tips to make FS9 as slick and as realistic as possible? In the meantime I'm busy downloading Comets, 1-11's, 707's, Caravelles etc. etc.

Happy New Year to you all and keep safe. :guinn:

What great news, Paul.
When I was running FS9 regularly, I loaded it with heaps of add-on scenery for my favourite areas, and used REX to tweak the appearance of sky and water. I also found as many good sound files as I could, put them into a new aircraft folder called "Power", and aliased my hangar inhabitants' sound to the entry in "Power."
Of course, all the graphics options were maxed.
btw, I'm a dinosaur when it comes to tech. stuff, but that's how I did it.
Have fun. ;)

Thanks Airspeed.
That sounds like an excellent idea regarding sounds. How does that work exactly if you don't me asking?

Hello ! been using Fs9 for a while, the HDEv2 sky and clouds textures are a must !.

Now ... it's weird that you can't get Fs9 to work in vista, i have it running on Windows 10 without any problems.

OK Paul,
I'm assuming that you're familiar with the folder structure in FS, and how to create new folders. If not, don't proceed until we've covered those very basics.

All you get out of this, is cutting the need for duplicating sound files in each aircraft which will use the set of sounds.
So, you might have eight different aircraft that all have the same engines; instead of carrying all those .wav files, all eight can be aliased to the one sound.
Names of this colour are up to you
In your list of Sim Object/Aircraft, create a new "Aircraft" folder called Power
In the Power folder, create another new folder called Four Merlins, to match your set of sounds so that you know easily what it is.
Copy the set of sounds that you want to use, then paste into this new folder.

Your Aircraft list will now have folders containing something like this:

Piper Commanche
Piper Warrior
Power

Clicking on Power should now show the name of the set that you pasted, and clicking on that name, you'll see all the relevant .wav files.

Now go to your actual Aircraft folder, click on it, go to Sound and click that. You'll see sound.cfg. Click on that, you'll see all the .wav files listed.
If there is NOT such a list, someone may have already "aliased" the sound in their model, and it will look like this:
[fltsim]
alias=C172\sound
but don't worry, we're nearly there.
For safety, step back and COPY your sound.cfg. The new file will have the word :Copy" in it, and FS will ignore it.
Go into the sound.cfg and delete everything (don't worry, you have a copy from above).
In that empty file, type:
[fltsim]
alias=Power\Four Merlins

Launch FS, and make sure that you are hearing the new sound set.
You can go back and delete the sound Copy.cfg
If all is well, repeat the procedure, adding new folders within Power, and aliasing the individual aircraft to the relevant sound.

Any problems? Tough!
No, really, let me know, and we'll get you sorted. :agree:

That's a great idea Mike! Sound files and the Sound folder can be very large, so if you have a substitute sound package for authentic sounds (eg. the many ones for specific engines done by Gary Jones), then it makes sense to only have one folder for that engine type, and alias any aircraft that use that engine to that one sound folder.

On another note, and in response to paul26may's original question, it's interesting to see the FS9 optimization tweaks & addons used here:
