Do you think adding a Time Period option is a good idea for a new FS?

How about a time period option for the new FS?

Post by lholmes »

Imagine being able to fly in a 1950's era FS, or a 1940's, or 30's etc.

This has been an idea for use with a recreation of Imperial Airways 1933.

See: http://w1.901.telia.com/~u90113820/imperial/

I've kind of started with my own FS2004, by populating the AI aircraft with 1930's era planes, and changing the taxiways to a grass texture.

Afterall, with all of the nice old planes in FS2004, it detracts from the setting to fly around modern airports and cities, etc.

Anyone know of other ways to recreate the past?

It would be fantastic.
Hell of a lot of work to do it, but if MS put the option in there I'm sure some addons would turn up.

Concur with that boys.

I have no idea how they would go about it but as DM said, if the option was there.. perhaps it would only be a matter of time before the addons started appearing.

Can never see built in period scenery ever happening though.

I thought at first you meant that the sim switched off after a certain amount of time!

While I can't see it happeneing on a larger scale, it's already built into the sim on the smaller side. The Berlin Wall is a great example :-D

I agree it would be a nice idea.

I seem to remember that back in the days of FS98, Bill Lyons and a group of others actually re-created just such a thing with their 'Golden Wings' era of aircraft and scenery. If memory serves, a second installation was needed and you could start whichever timed version of the sim you wanted.

It was a little complicated and only covered the USA but it was nice to go back to the 30's. It must have taken months of dedicated work to do but I think it had quite a following.

It would be great to go back to earlier times in aviation....nostalgia isn't what it used to be!!

Just found a link that is still 'live' and explains more fully what I was trying to re-collect.

Certainly an interesting idea.

Bill (a complete Master of FS design) has done the same for "Golden Hawaii" for FS2004. You click an icon on your desktop and all the airports, AI and even auto gen scenery turn to 1930's type. Click when you are done and it goes back to now.

Almost there Tonks. I got G-ARVF over the banking from the grass runway. Not many can say that.

It would be a nice idea, but not a straightforward one to do well enough.

There are so many things to take into consideration here from even just an airport/airfield standpoint.

For example: If you were to set the date back to 1942, you would have to have a lot of extra wartime airfields, some of which became airports later in life.

I'm just concentrating on the British Isles here, but there are so many permutations to this.
