Scenery mystery FSDS 3.5.1

Post by Airspeed »

I've assembled a few fsc s, but have a mystery:
Several are collections of buildings and tanks, which appear OK in FSX.
One is a pair of discs 1800m x 1000m, each with a 1024x1024 extended BMP, which also appears OK in FSX, and I can place self made objects on the location.

The problem comes when I add a disc under the buildings and tanks to take a BMP of the surrounding roads & vegetation.
I try to create a bgl or mdl, and I get a "failed to create" message, followed by a huge error report including "animation" errors, though there's no animation in the project.
Obviously the size of the disc or BMP isn't overloading anything, but combining them with the 3D objects is causing havoc.
Can't find help on this.
Ben & Dave have done extensive scenery, maybe you solved similar problems?

EDIT:
Tried making a separate base disc, but got same error creating that base.
It seems that the problem relates to the BMP. Have to do more practical stuff now....pressure, pressure! I'll be back.

Hi Mike,

i cant model for toffee I'm afraid. My scenery has only been airports or photo sceneries, and i used other folks models in the airports. I found it hard to get to grips with FSDS so used GMAX when I did have a play. Dave (Garwood) also uses Max, albeit the 3DS flavour. I'm not sure who is about that still uses FSDS. I know Rick and DM used it... And Garry too.

Thanks Ben.
How about George?
I've tried tiny steps to try and identify the problem:
Made a flat surface....creates .bgl OK
Applied a known working extended BMP.....creates .bgl OK
Took the desired 24bit BMP and saved as extended BMP
Added that DXT1 to FSDS Textures, converted it as warned must be 16 or 32 bit.
Applied texture.....ERROR:

Tried normal BMP (not extended)....ERROR
Converted BMP (not extended).....ERROR.

I'm at a loss as to why it worked OK for the two 900mx900m pics, but this 500x600m extracted from a 512x512BMP should be any different.
Meanwhile, I might try one of those other design progs. like GMAX that I have on board but haven't learnt. :$

If it is anything like GMax, it will handle textures only in Windows bmp or jpeg format. FSX cannot handle these so they need to be converted to extended bitmaps in the \Texture folder.

Thanks George.
After it worked with substituted BMPs, I finally decided to kill off the one I was using, and re-do it from scratch.
It now works! For some reason, it just didn't like that file.
I thought I must have crossed some imaginary border into forbidden territory.
Now past midnight again, but the 1/2 acre of back paddock is cut, AND my scenery is moving ahead after 3 days of :wall: . :excited: :excited:
