Sailing close to the wind?

Post by forthbridge »

Hi all

Replying to Peter's 208Sqn post, and quoting from a book I read got me thinking about a funny passage in it.

Seemingly the Radio operator on the boat was a Cockney and a bit of a 'wheeler dealer' shall we say.

Apparently, according to the authour, after D-Day they were covering the channel and berthed on one of the French beaches.

As the authour was chatting to 'Jock' (the inevitable Scottish engineer), the 'Sprarkie' came rushing back and grabbed a machine gun from the boat and asked the author to accompany him. They went up into some sand dunes, where a hut of sorts was crammed with road signs in German. The Sparkie took several signs, laid them in the sand and proceeded to shoot them up. Apparently he took them back and then sold them to desk-riding Americans in London.

I can only accept the truth of the story, and find it hilarious. Does anyone else kow of any such published (or not) acts of such or similar nature?

(obviously we don't want to drop anyone in it here!! )
