Trident Database Feature in Aeroplane (Monthly)

Post by AllanL »

The November Aeroplane has a database feature on the Trident, and an article on the MacRobertson Race winning DH88. There is a puzzling map that purports to show two routes for the race, one for the Speed Race and one for the Handicap Race.

I always thought that there were only the seven checkpoints, which the DH88 passed through, and also that the DH88 actually won both the Speed Race and the Handicap Race. The rules stated that only one prize could be claimed, so they forfeited the Handicap Prize. They could not have done that if stops at the intermediate "Handicap" points shown by Aeroplane had been missed.

The route shown by Aeroplane for the Handicap route looks suspiciously like the route followed by the DC-2 as it fits perfectly with the routes used by KLM at that time - and their entry was in part to show that commercial flight could be speedy and problem free. Did you know that KLM are about to celebrate their 90th. Birthday?

Oh - and there is news of the BBMF Hurricane IIC going to India in exchange for a Hurricane I that will be several years in the rebuild before we get to see it in the air. *-)
