Workers Weekend
October 1943.
Sponsor: Ministry of Information
Production: Crown Film Unit
Commentary by: Flying Officer J. Peach, Royal Canadian Air Force
‘A tribute to the workers of the British Aircraft Industry'. Men and women in a factory in the North-West of England set themselves the task of building a Wellington bomber in the record time of 30 hours. Constructing in their own time, the workers donate the bonus they got to the Red Cross ‘Aid to Russia Fund'.
The cameras capture the whole process of the construction in record time through to the test pilot taking off in the plane, ahead of schedule.
WMV & Quicktime download links are on the page.
Ps, Brooklands isn't it?

Hi Darren,
Great stuff, love that. Definately not Brooklands, somewhere up in the North West, so i guess it wasn't Vickers, but maybe one of the the other engineering companies who were building them during the war.

I've just found out it was at a factory at Broughton, North Wales.
There's a programme on BBC4 tonight at 8pm about it as well - http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00tr2p5
(Never knew about the BBC prog before posting either )

Read about this the other day on the Beeb website.
Turns out shift workers gave an entire weekend of leave up to build this, an incredible feat.

It was a super programme, at times quite moving and always gripping.
