Now let me get this right he was my Grandads Dads, younger brother which I think makes him my great grand uncle? Here he is in uniform not long before the fateful day (sitting down)

And here is is on deck standing far right hand side - you can make out HMS Black Prince on their caps

Cheers Scott I've tried to get my head around that many generations and I think he'd be your great, great uncle if he were your great grandad's brother. Dear.. that made my head hurt and I'm still not sure it's right

Bert Crowter my great-uncle (grandmothers brother) killed on the Somme 1916



His brother Charles Crowter on his wedding to Ethel in 1915. Charles was gassed during WWI. He survived but whether that had any influence on his death during the great smog of 1963 I don't know.

Marvellous pictures folks, reminds me of a huge sepia photo that hung over the mantlepiece at my late great-uncle Louis and great-aunt Florie's house. 'Uncle' Louis was a submariner during WW1, they were stuck on the bottom for a few days...he went down with a huge beard, the picture I remember, when they managed to surface what was left of his hair was pure white..which is how I remember him.

He served on HMS Hood during the Empire tour in the '20's, was posted off just before her last voyage..he never forgave himself for that, all his mates lost. He'd made a wooden model that us kids weren't allowed to touch. He was posted to HMS Kelly, commanded by Mountbatten, the ship went down during operations off Crete.

As kids we weren't allowed anywhere near him unless he said so........I can understand that now.

Anyway, my mum:




Edit: I can't remember how old I was when 'Aunty' Florie died, I remember being taken upstairs to see her in her coffin...'Uncle' Louis couldn't live without her and died a few weeks later.

Love the photo of your Mum Del, its funny how kids all look so cute when they're that age.

Allan, I wouldn't mind betting someone could identify the cap badge - it would give you a start on finding out where he was living when he joined the army, if its a local regiment.
