New VC10 stuff on my site...

Post by Archer »

Seeing as there might be one or two interested persons wandering around these parts I figured I might as well provide a heads up about some bits I've added to my site.

In June I posted the first part of 'Trials & tribulations' which are the memoirs of a first generation ground crew member. I have now (finally, my work got in the way) finished the second and third part of these memoirs which contain many great stories of the tropical trials of the VC10, along with other memorable events.

Another recently added bit is this page which pays tribute to the first production Standard VC10 G-ARVA:

I was reminded that on 8th November 1962 it flew for the first time and felt that she deserved a page of her own by now.

Enjoy!

Jelle :hello:

On Key you published a pic from your site I can't find on there

it was to show the Valiant in the background but more of interest is G-ASGB in the original stepped BOAC Speedbird without titles.

How many Supers wore that...I didn't think they had as it was short lived about the time the Standard went into service and the Supers followed a bit later. *-)

Hi Garry,

That photo is on this page: http://www.vc10.net/Memories/Trialstribulations_3.html about halfway down the page.

You are right, that scheme was not worn by many Supers. It was designed specifically for the VC10 and the Standards were all delivered in that scheme but it was changed just before the Super entered service. I have photos showing G-ASGB and G-ASGC in those colours but when G-ASGD flew the first commercial service it was in the changed livery which BOAC kept until the merger into BA. All the promotional shots were done using 'GD as well.

I've been in doubt whether G-ASGA also carried this 'Golden Speedbird' scheme but there are two photos on this page that seem to confirm that at least for a while, she did: http://www.vc10.net/Memories/Trialstribulations_2.html (have a look at the last photo on that page for example).

Thanks Jelle.

Never been a scheme I associate with the Super

I see what you mean in that pic, the gold band is clearly visible.

The livery was short lived and Airfix tried to keep up and I remember the local Woolworths with all three BOAC liveries on sale at the same time.

Still, it was due to be used on it, but they changed their minds at the last minute! As an addition, screenshots from the 'Look at life in the 60's' DVD are here and show G-ASGC in these same colours: http://www.flickr.com/photos/triggersca ... 862881350/ (about halfway down in this set of images). The DVD is quite interesting, this particular segment shows colour footage from the 60's taken at Brooklands.

A small addition, as not all the photos are new, but this page shows ex-BUA and later RAE Bedford VC10 G-ATDJ / XX914: http://www.vc10.net/Photos/cn_825__gatdj_xx914.html

Seeing as yesterday was the 50th anniversary of its first flight, here's a page about G-ARVB: http://www.vc10.net/Photos/cn_805__garvb.html
