Hi Garry,

Yes sad news,

it was strange yesterday as i watched the film ... In Which We Serve.. on Saturday and this was Richard's first film and i said to my wife that we had not heard much about him of late and then Sunday this news.

R.I.P

Roger.

We hadn't heard anything recently, and reading the reports it seems he had been living in a nursing home with his wife.

I often wonder why some celebrities get honours especially nighthoods.

In Sir Richards case it was well deserved. He represented Britain as they all do, but did so in an honourable, positive light.

Another institution fades into history. :( ...but only good memories of the man :)

I always liked his acting and he came from a very talented family.

I had the pleasure and honour of working with Richard on his final film, Closing the Ring, back in 2006. No airs or graces, kind, patient and appreciative of the work everyone was doing. His final word would always be "Thank you, darling" to every member of his crew, male or female. Some directors and actors may demand chairs with their names or titles stencilled on the back: he was happy to have the carpenters make up a plywood box for him to sit on. A gentleman.

A great loss of a great actor and director. I will always remember him in "The Great Escape" although Hollywood managed to Americanize that film far too much. I read the book "The Longest Tunnel" which is far more accurate than the movie. Anyway, my thoughts are with his family and friends.
