I used to do The Times crossword, before Murdoch dragged The Times into the gutter. One cryptic clue I always remember was "Bottom of the flying class" - it turned out to be "Weaver Bird" :doh:

Two clues that I remember from the past went something like :-

1) A horse in the African river causes minor difficulty(6)

and

2) h,i,j,k,l,m,n,o for a drink(5)
