Hurricane turning on a six pence.

I popped down to White Waltham Saturday as it was a nice day and was fortunate to catch a Hurricane and Spitfire from the BBMF.
I guess they were part of the Trooping the colour flypast. Not sure why they were at White Waltham?
Anyway both aircraft were parked tightly with all the other GA aircraft (much like you get with FSX) and I was surprised to see the Hurricane able to turn on one wheel, albeit in short spurts I guess by judicious amounts of brake and power.

Just wanted to share as most aircraft in FSX seem to have great difficulty in rurning at all especially tail draggers.

BTW I didn't see the Spitfire depart. Anyone know if it had a problem?

If you don't have rudder pedals with toe brakes and rely on the keyboard (or a button on a joystick) then yes turning can be difficult. With toe brakes it is easy to turn any aircraft around in FSX and tail draggers (with castoring tailwheels) are often easier to turn than tricycle gear aircraft. The hard part sometimes is stopping them turning once the turn has been initiated! Remember too that many tail draggers had/have tail wheel locks which need to be unlocked before attempting any ground manoeuvres.

If you have two or more engines and multiple throttle controls as well as rudder pedals and toe brakes then even very large aircraft are easy to turn on the ground by using differential throttles as well as differential brakes.

Correct answer, Larry! :agree:

I use toe brakes on my setup, but the default differential brakes are "numpad * and -" if you need to use the keyboard. :cpu: ;)

My father, an aircraft engineer, used to curse pilots who rotated their aircraft on one wheel, because it often caused the tyre to twist on its rim...hence the white markers on tyres & rims.

It is very easy to turn a light aircraft around of you use a little braking, even a 172. It works better on taildraggers due to the distance between turning center and tail wheel. As for tires... I don't have to change them myself 😉

No... but you'll have a nasty surprise if the valve tears off the tube during takeoff, won't you :poke:

Thats true...

Maintain directional control using rudder and asymmetrical braking
Close throttle
Allow a/c to some to a halt
Evaluate whether to vacate the runway
Call for assistance
Debrief in the bar

Sixpence is what Noddy used to charge for a ride in his red & yellow car.
Yes, I too, get those creep marks when my underpants slip.
As for tubes in tyres, you've got me there!
