That photograph was certainly not taken in 1961. There is a c 1967 Ford Cortina , a BMC 1100 , and on the left what could be an XJ6 which would put it at 1968 onwards ( or it might be a P6 Rover )

Right on, Chris.
I queried the date with the current owner of the collection, and received the following response:

Hi Mike

Thanks for your interest, I have a lot of images received from a late friend and are just going through them all and that particular image a pal of mine dated it with the cars in the background, unfortunately another pal gave me a precise date which he thought and I did not check. We are going for 1969 now which we think it may have been on display to coincide with the release of the Battle of Britain film.

If you like Spitfires a couple of other images also taken at Southampton attached, OO ARC was in May 1961, not sure of MD124 as yet.

Best wishes
Barry

Thanks for reaching out to Barry, Mike. :) The Battle of Britain film release idea makes sense. I just couldn't imagine why a Spitfire would be parked at the Southampton Civic Centre.
