To replace the Typhoon.
Regards
Nigel.
Sheesh! seems only 5 minutes ago they introduced the Typhoon. :dunno:
And then you realise its first flight was in 1994, and it's been in service since 2003. By the time the Tempest is ready, the Typhoon will be 25 years old, so it's not an unrealistic replacement timeline. The F-22 began replacing the F-15 in 2005, 29 years after the F-15 was introduced.

I think they should have had a public poll for the name, instead of calling it Tempest.

Ah, the BAe Planey Mc-Planeface then.

The picture that dominates the news everywhere makes it look like a miniature F-22, but an article on FlightGlobal shows it from a different angle:

https://www.flightglobal.com/news/artic ... er-450327/

Although by the time she actually enters service in over a decade's time (hah! Probably mid-2040-ish, knowing the tendency for this kind of thing to overrun its deadlines), the finished Tempest may end up resembling this mock-up as much as the Typhoon resembles the BAe EAP.

Knowing how these things would turn out, Planey would probably be rejected in favour of public choice 2 - the BAe Spitfire...

I quoted this, above:
"....ensuring the UK's continued leadership in fighter technology......"

I'm watching the headlines to see if he says that he "mis-spoke"
