What does this button do?

Perhaps that was what the mechanic was thinking, or maybe he'd just been fixing the cannon and wanted to test if it was working now?

How does one end up in this situation?

Oops! It can be docked from his pay I suppose although he would have to sign up for several hundred years service. :agree: EricT

In the RAF;

Board of Inquiry followed by Courts Martial if the board think he was at fault.

Not a promising career move.

However it could just as easily been an electrical fault. Runaway Vulcan canons are not unheard of.
