The other week we in Redditch were supposed to get a flypast by a Hurricane. What we got was a Spitfire of the BBMF that missed the town and gave a display over the local prison and he was ten minutes late.

There is a tale, which I'm assured is true, about something similar at Duxford.

They were having a display day, and during the afternoon a Lakenheath-based F-15 came on the radio. The aircraft was on its way home from a training flight over Wales, and the pilot said he was aware of the display, and would they like him to do a low fast pass. Oh yes please, replied Duxford, and having agreed the timing, the display schedule was quickly re-jigged.

"Two minutes out," the F-15 pilot announced. Silence fell, with every one looking off to the west in anticipation.

" One minute out."

" 15 seconds out."

Everyone still looking west. Nothing to be seen or heard

A minute later, the radio crackles. "Hope you liked it," says the F-15 pilot, "good day".

Everyone at Duxford baffled , looking at each other, scratching heads, nothing but sounds of birdsong.

Two minutes later, the phone rings.

'Duxford speaking...hello ?'

' This is Cambridge airport - you're having a display today, aren't you. Were you expecting an F-15 ?'

' Yes...why ?'

' It's just gone down the length of our runway at about 10 feet'.

12 miles off course! I guess that the training flight was not exactly a success?
I shudder to think of the consequences if a passenger liner was on the runway at Cambridge International.

A few years ago a USAF "Stealth fighter" flew around Fairoaks when it should have been at Farnborough. Can't remember exact details.

That's how it stayed stealthy. The people who were looking for it couldn't see it. Bloody clever, them Colonials.
