When I were a lad...

5 to 9 years old - Bradford :(
'ad to walk more than mile to school in deep snow (winter of '63). Snow over me wellies so sore legs and wet socks.
'ad to play out in t'rain. And snow. And sunshine. And freezin cold.
'ad to eat after me father and older brothers - booo!
Always jam sandwiches for tea.
Got beaten before I said anything. Just in case.

And later - Suffolk :)
Miles of countryside, haystacks, ponds, lagoons, sea, forest and wildlife (heaven).
5 mile bus journey to school, which we would sometimes, accidentally on purpose, miss. Still a 5 mile walk never hurt anyone.
Lizards at the bus stop.
Cherry trees. What they actually grow on trees and you can pick them and eat them?
Scrumping!
Finding a derelict house with a large strawberry patch!
RAF Woodbridge and RAF Bentwaters! Phantoms and Hercs.
Strange ponds with old WWII munitions in them.
Taking one such old munition home and causing a bit of a panic.

Childhood was definitely a game of two halves!
