It is of no surprise and job losses could be very high.

I’m not sure, it was slatted to end production soon anyway was my understanding and I think the only orders on the books were for the freighter.

Is the 747 -8 freighter still going to be produced, or is it the end of both passenger and freight versions ? Looking at Flightradar these days, the freight business crossing the Atlantic still looks fairly healthy.

The whole lot. It’s the end of 747 production. Who’s going to buy one now, even for freight. I suspect there’ll be a few conversions for low cycle 747-400’s and 777, so I’d think the MD-11’s will be replaced soon too.

Very sad to see that 'The Queen of the Skies' is to cease production :( :( :(

I've been fortunate enough to fly on three different marques -

B747-100 Continental
B747-200 Continental and Air New Zealand
B747-400 Air New Zealand, Malaysian and Virgin

It always felt like I was flying on something special (can't say the same for the B777, even though it gets the job done) and enjoyed every minute of each of the flights.

I used to travel the polar route on 747s between Heathrow and Tokyo, via Anchorage. I even managed to wangle a visit to the flight deck once, on a BA flight coming home. The best 747 flight I've ever had was in first class with Singapore Airlines from Singapore to London - they took very good care of me. I'll miss the Jumbo too; she's a true aviation 'great'.

I've flown 727, 737, 757, 767, 777, and 787. Sadly, never flew in a 747.

I remember an interesting conversation with the Capt of a BA 747-200 ( actually the ex-BCAL aircraft which was known as Hitler's Revenge amongst the crews because of its unreliability ) once , who had previously been on DC10s, and he said that when he transferred it felt like taking a step back in time , but that he felt with the 747 on his licence he would never be out of a job ! The most noticeable step back for me compared with both DC10 and Tristar was the noisiness of the airflow round the 747 cockpit

PS 511 Flyer : was your 727 time with Danair ?

I think we went to Gran Canaria, and it might have been Iberia. Some Grey Cells have turned Black I'm afraid.

I don't think there will be an immediate end, think they still have 12-16 on order as freighters, I went on the Boeing website looking for more information and in there news articles found this Posted July 29.
While our 767 and 747 rates remain unchanged, in light of the current market dynamics and outlook, we’ll complete production of the iconic 747 in 2022. Our customer commitment does not end at delivery, and we’ll continue to support 747 operations and sustainment well into the future.
