OK, with the new information revealed by the second photo, I'd like to change my guess to the Hawker Tempest I prototype (I think there was only one).

Champion, Keith! I think I'm being tough, but you are all so very observant.
Maybe the next one will just be a couple of rivets?

I thought that "B" might cause more confusion, as it doesn't look like any production Tempest.
They still had quite a lot of problems, especially with the engine, which resulted in the Tempest V going ahead of the II.
"They" decided to overlook the failings and get production under way. This was fortunate, as it was one of the few
fighters fast enough to intercept V-1s, and it saved 9 months of delay.
