A wild stab in the dark.... BLEU Blind Landing Experimental Unit?
Not that far off the mark as far as use goes, Ben.
We're agreed on these aircraft being Gee - equipped.
The following from Wiki talks of its early days:
Gee was devised by Robert Dippy as a short-range blind landing system to improve safety during night operations.

I knew it. I’ve photos of the Lanc with her tail obscured and she’s referred to as “one of the early BLEU workhorses” but i think it predates BLEU

That's good gen ,Ben.
Does your photo include the unit code? It would be interesting to see whether the same Squadron went on to use Gee for navigation.

No Mike, it’s a pretty poor black and white one. I’m sure I had a side on photo, but I cannot find it for love nor money.

Can't argue with that Eric. :agree:

Aw, come on you chaps, surely Pete and Ben aren't the only ones willing to have a go?
Still, maybe you have lives to live?

Fin flash, pretty much all air forces and aircraft that were subject to Air Ministry Order A.154/39

RAF
RCAF
RAAF
RNZAF
RNoAF
SAAF
IAF

USAAF (aircraft on temporary loan eg 51 OTU Beaufighters or assigned under joint command)

Ttfn

Well done, Pete! It was the USAAF under joint command that was most likely to be overlooked.

I've spent hours cross-checking Bomber Command details. Sometimes there are discrepancies, so I've been finding other sources to get a third/fourth opinion.

I think that you've all had enough of this one.
I compiled many pages of description relating to airfields, unit codes, aircraft flown, and key dates of changes.
When I tried to insert it all into my Museum notes, the formatting went crazy. It looks like it will be a while till I get that sorted.

Meanwhile, I have uploaded a page with just the Lancaster tail markings.
The Halifax tail fin represents an aircraft from 4 Group, 158 Squadron

To find the Lancaster identification, click on the link in my signature, select the Flying Visit Museum, then select Special Detail followed by Bomber Command.

Thanks to those who tried.
