Re: Aircraft Nicknames
I'm either aware of the aircraft or the nickname, but not the two together.Chris Trott wrote: 'Guppy' - 737
'Whale' - 747
'Diesel-8' - DC-8
'Pocket Rocket' - 727-100/200 Advanced
'Fat Albert' - C-130
To me (and my aviation friends),
737 has always been a 'Pig'
747 a 'Lump'
'Pocket Rocket' has only ever applied to one aircraft- the One-Eleven.
'Fat Albert' - A C5 Galaxy.
A couple of additions
Later MD-80's, with the flattened rear fuselage were 'Screwdrivers'
F104 Starfighter - 'Widow Maker'.
Regards
Kevin
Re: Aircraft Nicknames
Those two apply to me as well Kev. I grew up knowing those nicknames. They will never leave me..Kevin Farnell wrote: 737 has always been a 'Pig'

I suffer from paranoid amnesia. I can't remember who I don't trust.

Because they have a sort of elegant yet stumpy appearance like budgies.Chris558 wrote:Okay, I've been wanting to know this for a while: WHY are 748s called Budgies?
The long wing and short body giving that look.or at least that what we've always understood

My 2 favouite trainers:
DH Tiger Moth - 'Tiggie'
DH Chipmunk - 'Chippie'
I read someting about the Chippie also being called the 'Flying Sardine' but it was on a Canadian webpage, so I'm sure that's Canadian terminology.
Oh, and one I actually flew:
Cessna 152 - 'Spam Can' (It was in Australia so may have different nickname here.)
