Like you I tried that with FS9 Flight Planner and got absolutely nowhere with it so then decided I would plan my own route and fly it without even using the GPS.

If I was to fly from say East Midlands to Newcastle and return I will first select Trent (TNT) VOR select the heading to fly to it by turning the OBS until the needle is central then on to (POL) followed by the (NEW) VOR.

For my return flight I may navigate back using the ADF but they have a much shorter range than the VORs'. I find it much more challenging flying this method than just relying on a navigation tool or the GPS.

When I have flown from East Midlands to Newcastle between (POL) and (NEW) VOR I start my descent then transfer to using the ADF before intercepting the ILS, equally I always plan an instrument go-around using the ADF should it ever be necessary.

Again, I find that by not using FS9 flight planner or the GPS when flying and doing it all myself, a much more interesting and satisfying experience.

Regards Nigel.
