Connecting two PC's

two types of networking cables mates
used to network PC's
a Network cable or a Crossover Cable
or EIA/TIA 568A and EIA/TIA 568B

"Cat 5" is a type of cable that is Plenum rated
becasue of it's sheath (typically blue in color)

It's the conductors that are important
8 wires = 4 pairs and each pair are twisted at a different rate
per foot to keep the signal from leaking over to the other wires in the cable
all eight must be terminated but only four are used to transfer data
it's the path of the cables ends that make them work different

I have three connected
my main computer and a second desktop wired thru a wirless G router
and my laptop has a wirless card
I make the cables myself often, being an electrician
it's tedious... even like murder.. getting all the wires placed in the correct order
I use my Fluke Ti200 to tone them out to make sure the terminations are correct.
my networked PCs were setup using the wizard (no need to get fancy really)
and it will configure the firewall for you.
i can share files and folders between all three using the
share files and folders process.
double click on "my computer"
then right click on your main HD ...(typically C: drive) and then choose security and sharing from the list.
