It always surprises me when that shot is shown and deemed a fake.
The aircraft never actually touches down as it is supposed to be scooping water - And I think its been discussed at length elsewhere on the forum
Oh By the way - the scene was shot at Moses lake - just south of Ephrata,
washington which played the part of "Flat rock Colorado" the training base in the movie.
There are many examples of that kind of filming in Hollywood
The most famous one is the Billboard vs Beech 18 scene in "Its a Mad Mad
Mad World" , where the late great Frank Tallman really did fly a bugsmasher through a Billboard - admittedly it was paper streched across a frame but it was real.
One of my previous employers Key-Air was used in a B move made in the
early 80s - I cannot find the clip on the web - but it appears on late night TV occasionally - the scene involves two little old ladies who get lost driving
they are seen driving on to what appears to be an Interstate - the passenger tells the driver there is someone trying to pass her - the response is "So wave them around" the camera then pans to look through the windshield looking back - a 727 is seen to be gaining on the car and
when the passenger waves her arm the aircraft rotates and takes off
over them - Ive seen the clip as have other who claim it to be a fake -
The Aircraft was N29KA (yes the Cooper aircraft) The captain was an
ex Continental pilot and it was all filmed at Mojave - and the car did start off in fron of the aircraft which then started its take off roll and rotated approx 500 feet from the car - of course there was only two stuntmen in the car - and Don Kyker said they did it in three takes never coming
closer than the above stated 500 feet...of course with a lighlty loaded
727 theonly problem was NOT catching up with the convertible which was travelling at almost 100 mph down the runway. _ BTW if anyone can find the clip on the web I'll gladly take a copy.
Cheers
Leif
