Hi Garry this one brings back memories of when I used to bunk off school and cycle the 20 miles to Coventry and see these things! In fact I found one with the starboard clamshell door off and awaiting to be dismantled :-( I took the oportunity that any 12 year old would and climbed on and was a pilot in my very own 170 for a couple of hours until the security turned up, well an old chap puffing a woodbine and a dog that had a silvery grey colour to his fur, I think he was the old guys ash tray! Anyway I was evicted but not before finding a Britannia on its belly about to be stripped..but thats another story ;-)

That sounds like theit spares ship..G-ANVR, one of the first things it lost was it's port nose door which maybe why you always see pics of it from the starboard side.
Was it in basic BAF two tone???

For some reason folk keep mixing thess up with standard type 170's
Those were Freighter 21/31 and some passed to the RAAF. The standrad marks went all over the world.
I was referring to the Superfreighter Mk 32 which is my subject and that's probably as far as anyone of them went.
They rarely went into deep Europe even, only occasionally
The Karachi movement I have no idea about but they were used for trooping flights

Could the reason be the fitting of extra seats?......Just a thought.....make the door smaller, move the bulkhead a tad and fit in some more seats....a logical thought....not neccessarily the right one maybe... :roll:

I would think less seats :think:
That would make the hold larger at the expense of the cabin....the new door is further back
The 32 was two standard cars and 24 pax....or......2 large cars or 3 standard or 4 small and 12 pax
That would not get an extra mini in but might allow 4 standard cars and either 8 pax or perhaps they put a row in the rear toilet area and seats down the port side to maintain 12 pax.the toilet could then have gone in the sternframe acess area.
Normally there was only one seat on the port behind the door, so a bit of space could have been used there.
Perhaps it is something else....but half of the CAB fleet were modified (4 aircraft), so there was a good reason behind it
There were other seating arrangements at various times and the pax seats were collapsible and could be stored in a large bin formed by the rear wing carry through. The type was actually a combi although not a term used yet and even more than that it was a QC as well.
For this reason they never sold any Mk.22 Wayfarers as they had offered the 21E covertable/mixed pax freight and that did the biz. They followed the with the 31 and there was a 31E mixed as well and the 32 was specifically a car ferry version of the 31E.
To account for the wide CG variations there are flat shelves in the nose door on which they placed flat weights as needed to restore the balance.
If anyone is still in doubt of the differences between the 31 and the 32 Superfreighter.

The Superfreighter accounted for only 20 of the 214 170's built.
That number was increased to 22 when two Air Charter Mk31's were converted.
