In our household Windows is losing ground to Linux, and that's a trend that will continue when XP support is pulled. One PC will stay with XP so that I can run FS9, the rest will move over to the penguin, Ubuntu for SWMBO and Kurumin (localised Debian) for me. TTFN

Added a second hard drive to my main machine and installed Win 7 on it so I can compare like with like. Have XP on the other drive as I never made the move to Vista so only really used it on my Sister's laptop.

The big difference for FSX between XP and newer MS OS's (Vista and Seven) is DirectX 10, which is not available for XP. Check out the screen shots here:

Yeah, I've been trying both DX9 and DX10. There's a slight frame rate drop with 10 but nothing major, not all effects seem to be working though....

Alas, no. Mojave was/is a stunt M$ deployed to get people to try Vista without any preconceived notions, or clue they were working with Vista.

That is one of the most misleading pieces of advertisement they have. With the PROPER equipment (i.e. a CH Products Yoke & Pedals), any commercially available flight sim which is on their list (which includes about 30 titles right now) can be used for up to 10 hours of instrument flight training and is allowed for some of the initial VFR flight training in certain instances. They are categorized as a Category D Flight Training Device in this setup.

I laid out a plan and had it approved in principle with the FAA for a Category B Flight Simulator representing the CV-580 or CV-240 for my former employer had we chosen to build one that used FS9 as a basis for its visual and flight dynamics display. The issue is the equipment running the software more than the software itself. You must prove that your flight models are within 5% of the books in all situations to be replicated by the simulator for a Category B, but their major issue is that the systems behave properly during failures and the frame rates be at an acceptable level (typically around 25fps).

TBH i didnt look for any differences between the two, there was only a selected group that had the HP to try out...

Im thinking of taking FSX off the laptop and trying FS9 in it for tuition and trial...

A warning about MP3 files and Windows 7 beta

"MP3 files

When MP3 files are added (either manually or automatically) to either the Windows Media Player or the Windows Media Center library, or if the file metadata is edited with Windows Explorer, several seconds of audio data may be permanently removed from the start of the file. This issue occurs when files contain thumbnails or other metadata of significant size before importing or editing them."

There is a fix once you have installed at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=139391.

But before then:

"Before you install this beta release, back up all MP3 files that might be accessed by the computer, including those on removable media or shared network resources.

Ensure that all MP3 files are set to read-only. To do this, in Windows Explorer, find the files, right-click them, click the General tab, and then select the Read-only check box."

Thats one of the issues about making a Beta generally available... if there is a bug, many folk won't be reading the Blogs on Technet or MSDN to fix it. Never put a beta OS (or connect a Beta OS for that matter) on something that you can't afford to loose
