The airlift finished in '49 so she wasn't there long
Incredible just how many there were sitting arround until the likes of Freddie laker recovered them for scrap. Of course the materials were soreley needed but it's a shame out of thousands just a handful could not have been spared :-(
I guess though at the time there were so many they seemed of little or no sentimental value...Even the more famous Lancaster only survives more by luck than planning.

Yes mate.. that's partially true. Many.. the vast majority of Halton/Halifax's never flew again (after the Air Lift) and this includes many that Freddie Laker was responsible for. I think all of his Bond aircraft flew back to Southend on completion and were scrapped thereafter having never flown again. It's one of those odd things where the very strong independants of the day fell by the wayside either before, during or shortly after the Air Lift and some of the smaller, lesser known airlines grew from strength to strength during and after.
