Whats your spec and does it work for you?

Post by VEGAS »

Hi all,

Posted recently regarding my intention to buy a new desktop and am interested at what spec's people have.

Seen a few machines that interest me but obviously many of them are priced way over what my budget is.

Not sure if I am over speccing with regards to what I want. I have been looking at ATI radeon 4870 GFX equiped PC's and also Nvidia 9500GT machines with Intel Quad Q8400 CPU. Should I look at lower spec CPU's and GFX?

The main purpose of the new machine will be to fly FSX.

So, whats your PC spec and does it run FSX at a decent rate with sliders on decent settings?

Thanks

Hi Mate,

My tin is fairly old now, but was cutting edge when I bought it.... Intel Quad Extreem 2.66GHz, 4GB RAM, NVidia 880 GTX. Still runns everything very well and I've no intention of replacing it for at least another 18 months.... not bad considering I bought it Jan 2007.

Nvidia 9800GTX 512mb (thinking of swapping it out for a GTX 285)
Intel core 2 quad Q9450 2.66ghz (overclocked to 3.4ghz)
4gb G.Skill ram (2x 2gb)
Gigabyte GA-X38-DS4 Intel X38 mobo
Samsung SpinPoint F1 1000GB SATA hdd.
Vista Sp2 X64

Built it about a year and a half ago and is still going strong :)

Runs FSX at near enough full settings at 1920x1080 with 4aa 16af (can go 8x but smother at 4x and dont really notice at that res). Gets rather choppy near Heathrow with max AI courtesy of UT2 and real weather from REX.
Runs other games pretty much spot-on except games like GTA4 that require at least 1gb of vram at full settings.

Q6600 o/c'd @3.0ghz, 6gb ram, though I only see all that when I boot to W7 64bit.
8800gt 512mb vid card
3 x 250gb HDs

Runs FSX quite well with most sliders to the right. Frame rates vary depending on area & add-on scenery. Usually 30-50, but too much AI traffic can be a killer at a busy & detailed airport.

Not noticed and FPS increase with W7, although it does load much quicker and seems smoother. I've probably got a lot less cr@p running in the background than my XP boot

My spec:

Intel Quad CPU Q9650 @ 3.00GHz
8GB RAM
Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit
NVIDIA GeForce 9600GT
2 x Internal HDs, 1 x 250GB and 1 750GB, 1 external 750GB HD used as back up
'D Drive (750GB) exclusively used by FS9/FSX and Train Sim
System built by PC Specialists and used exclusively for flight sim/train sim and digital photography

Even with this system FSX can get the dreaded stutters on occasion e.g. in multi cloud layers and over complex scenery, otherwise it does the business for me.

My system:

Q6600 (2.4 GHz limited to 2.3 by crappy motherboard)
Radeon X1950Pro 512MB
Various SATA HDDs

I'm looking at upgrading at the moment (keeping the CPU in any case). There are much better AGP cards available at the moment (HD3850 and HD4670), but I also have a PCIe slot (albeit only x4, which is probably similar bandwidth to AGP x8). So I might spend 100 notes or so on a new card. I haven't really got the motivation to replace the motherboard (with all that entails) any more, not to mention the cash!

For FSX, I would always recommend MHz over extra cores. FSX will make more use of the extra MHz from a Core2Duo than it will from the extra cores on a similarly priced Core2Quad. Of course, the same isn't true of later software.

If I had one, I would. Later this year, I hope I will. ;-)
