Yep just the same Garry - there are seat cushions which are quite comfortable, but for formation flying, spin practice or when its just come out of maintenance, I'll take those out and put the chutes in instead. Aren't chippies the same ? Seem to remember waddling across Shawbury to a waiting Chipmunk when I was in the air cadets. Thinking about it I seem to remember a few waddling back from aircraft too (even after they's taken the parachute off ). Aero's weren't everyones cup of tea

I flew Chippies at Shawbury too (and gliders at Ternhill)! What a small world! Which Sqn were you in? I was with 435 Sqn Newcastle-under-Lyme, part of the Staffordshire Wing from 1970-73.

LOL.....I always seemed to get the flight right after lunch (I think the Flt. Sgt. gave it to me on purpose!.....bastrad!) and I loved aeros. In fact aeros spoiled fairground rides for me as they seemed tame after being thrown around the sky in a Chippie.

Yes matey. Your right. I also conducted air experience flights in a chippie from RAF Woodvale in the 1980's and remember having a parachute strapped to my backside. I recall laughing at others waddling around as they walked to and from the aircraft.

Much prefered flying in the bulldog.

Talking of AEF - Techy & I were remembering the video you were shown before you flew when we drove down to the Flight 1 event at Shoreham recently - the 'jump Jump John' film. I've googled it tonight as I was sure it must be out there on the web somewhere, but alas nothing showed up in the quick search I did

I only ever did Chippies, would have killed for a ride in a Bulldog but the chance never came about. I was 100 Sqn (Nantwich) from 85-90 so Shawbury was the closest AEF outfit. I did wangle my way onto the gliding scholarship at Ternhill when I was 16, culminating in a solo circuit in a Venture glider after 5 hours 40 mins of instruction. I don't have kids, but if I ever do they'll be joining the cadets whether they like it or not - money can't buy the sort of experiences afforded by the ATC and the RAF.

I don't think I've ever seen a CHipmunk close up or flying and I guess only seen maybe two or three in my life
