We 'youngsters' keep it simple these days.
The
woodentop is more commonly known as the
'tit' to most folk in the job nowadays.
Very impractical and awkward to wear, especially when chasing someone. Looks the part though. The tourists love them.
Flat caps are the in thing with most officers. You can see my partner and his hat on the dashboard in the picture.
I suffer from paranoid amnesia. I can't remember who I don't trust.

Woodentop was or is a derogatory comment made about the uniform branch by the plain clothes branch also known as the 'creeping insects department'.

TBH I have never heard that term woodentop!
Though when younger had a very sheltered life I guess, mind you I have never seen an officer give footchase wearing one as they always took them off and then given chase, must be summat to do with not being aerodynamically designed for anything faster than plodding the beat!!
