Thanks for the explanation When I mentioned 'beefed up'.. I was thinking more in line with say, a 747 and a 747F.. both of which look pretty much identical outside other than the obvious doors and lack of windows. That's an extreme example I know but I didn't want to say one was different from the other without knowing.. better no steer than a bum steer As it happens with the 748, it's much like similar aircraft of the day.. including the Vanguard/Merchantman I'm reasonably au fait with, that is, the same basic aircraft with the same limitations across the board, modified to be one or the other I spent some time looking at the 748 when the model was being made but have no real knowledge of the freighter.. it's almost as if it's new!

All the 748 freighters I've seen were converted from pax aircraft. Seats, carpets, galleys, toilets, hat racks, cabin linings etc removed and metal linings down cabin sides to convert it to an E-compartment. Tie down points went into the seat rails. It is a permanent conversion, or at least it would take a looooong time (and money) to put it back to pax.

At BIA, we used the Heralds for mail and newspapers. Freight 1 config was basically just seats out, Freight 2 was seats, galleys and toilets out. Gave you another couple of hundred kilos.

I gather it wasn't a 5min job to convert the Herald to freight#1 either but what flexibility hey. What would the turnaround time be from pax to freight#2?

Seem to remember that to re-role the Andover took just under an hour, seats out (no carpet) galley and left bare or long range fuel tanks fitted.

As the re-roling usually took place after last pax flight of the day, the proximity to last orders usually had greatest influence on time taken.

It was quicker in the Andover as we could chuck it all out the back via the ramp.

Herald had the nice big double door at the back end and seats usually out of there on to a flat bed transit.
