I'd just like to point out, I don't have an anorak... Or notebook full of numbers either...

I didn't think that for one minute. You're just a chap who's interested in the railways (and god knows.. we have a load here!) and knew the answer to what was a genuine question regarding the use of nameplates
You don't have an anorak and a little book full of numbers do you??
It was a great answer mate and I commend it to the house

Re: Black 5 for Speedbird591
Headboards are regularly used on preserved railways, usually on their prestige trains such as a Pullman type dining train. They are also made for special occasions such as works outings and retirements. I made one to commemorate the Railway Letter Service of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. I made it a border of RLS postage stamps heavily varnished so they didn't peel off. I also made for specials to go on the engines on Yorkshire day, each headboard carried the name of a famous Yorkshire hero. Another trick when we were expecting visiting dignitaries was to adorn the front of their loco with their national flag crossed with a Union Jack, the flags always looked great at the start of the trip but at the end of the run they would be oil streaked from the exhaust.

Well done that manFodda wrote: This image shows a beautiful BR green class 55 Deltic carrying the headboard for the route even though no Deltic was ever named Flying Scotsman in their own right.

Perhaps named after some anonymous Scot who went for a walk amongst thistles, wearing a kilt
Bob - who worked on/maintained & very occasionally drove the odd deltic

Hi Bob
From my drivers seat on such as 45428 and 44767 all Deltics were odd. But seriously, running one on a preserved line is like having a racehorse pulling a milk float. On an ECML express they were and sounded wonderful.
