Ahhh but according to the septics, the BoB was a minor skirmish that occurred before WW2 started...

Hurricane was the better gun platform but the Spifire with it's name and looks inspired the nation
In the CI there were reports of odd Spitfire straffing runs even attacks with single percussion bombs.....the fact they were usually Mustangs doesn't detract from the awe of seeing a 'Spitfire' even if that was not what it was because in reality, to Joe Public all the fighter of that class were Spitfires.

... I'm more surprised that the Americans don't claim to have won the BoB to be honest.. a far more conceivable theory than attributing it to the RN![]()

I'd forgotten about that film about Pearl Harbor (Pearl Harbor for those who're not sure). Wasn't it an American pilot who won the BoB single handed before going back to Hawaii in that?
And of course it was a US submarine that captured the German naval Enigma machine wasn't it?
Must be true, Hollywood told me so.

Re: Competition to design a Spitfire memorial
I was about 8 yrs old when my Dad pulled me to TV one evening, to show me Guy Hamilton's Battle of Britain film. I wasn't allowed to see much on TV then so that was quite a highlight! And I remember one scene: the German general (Curd Jürgens?) is asked what can be done in order to turn the tide and win the battle and he answers: give me a bunch of Spitfires...

Yes.. while it wasn't Kurt Jurgens on that particular occassion (he played the German Ambassador).. the line you mention is most memorable and wasn't well received by Herr Goering

Re: Competition to design a Spitfire memorial
It was Adolf Galland in real life who answered Goering's question with "a squadron of Spitfires". Played in the film by Manfred Reddemann.WhisperJet wrote:snip ...is asked what can be done in order to turn the tide and win the battle and he answers: give me a bunch of Spitfires...Nick
