You can't blame em for initiative!
I think the train looks quite good. Even if the fuel bill in this day and age would be astronomical.
Certainly would need good brakes as well..!

Jet engines in ships is not unusual....some had RR Tynes but they are usually inside as part of a more conventional setup
I can just imagine the environmentalists having a field day with Euston full of jet powered trains.........it would drive them loco.

It,s not just a Russian thing. There were gas turbine powered locomotives used by Union Pacific on heavy freight hauls. I think the paired jets in one pod a la B-36 and B-47 were trialled on a passenger carrying railcar. I think the M-1 Abrams tank also is gas turbine powered.

Didn't BR or one of the companies produce an experimental GT loco? I think I read sowhere that it used the turbine for high speed cruising and a normal diesel for slow speed and shunting.

There are some interesting links underneath the pictures. I enjoyed reading about the St-Petersberg water landing by a TU-124.

GT are quite commonly used for many purposes....it's really the strapped on the outside using convention jet propulsion that's unusual
Normally there are used in just the same way a steam turbine would be.

The American jet powered train was a Budd railcar with the twin J-47 pod from a B-36 moounted over the driving cab. It reached a speed of 183 mph. It seems it may have inspired the Russian version.

According to this article it was to gather data for high speed trains.
