I recall 'liquorice wood.' Twigs, bought for a copper(not policeman) coin from the sweetshop. When chewed disintegrated into a yellow fibrous mess but one's chewing released the flavour of liquorice!

Anyone remember sweets being on ration? What a rush and a long 'Q' when the grapevine let it be known that the shop had received a delivery of sweets. Almost a riot!!

Two things of great value have now disappeared from shops, "Spangles" = Fruit flavoured (we were told) boiled sweets about 0.5" square and 0.25" thick with a dimple moulded into each of the largest surfaces, then that staple of lunch boxes and picnics, Lyons Individual Fruit Pies!!! Lots of flavours and really good value. I cannot understand why those two products were discontinued.

You mention vending machines Dave

They were of course nothing like todays

You put your penny in and turned the stiff knob on the side a turn or two as it clonked through the cycles before the goods dropped down.

They had them for postage stamps too :)
