RS or FJ?

Post by DaveB »

Vanguard APEB proves it IS possible to have the best of both worlds. I like this interim livery ;)

Indeedmate :agree:

That keeps the nose wrap which looked better on the Vanguard :)

Funny how only one pic of that has ever surfaced and I wonder that if the Silver City had not been there..........it was standing beside it......it may never have been recorded.

That's true mate. I've only ever seen one picture and I guess it's the same one you've seen. Thank goodness it was captured when it was otherwise we may never have been able to enjoy it

Nice picture Dave. Just looking at the picture, I think the Vanguard looks similar to the DH Comet or it could be I'm just seeing things.

Wonder when it was done like that; I have a photo of EB at Edinburgh in the early 70's in full RS with the grey nose ring. I guess the ring was painted out when the FJ bits were applied :dunno:

Also remember seeing an RS Vanguard taking off at Jersey in the summer (June?) 73. By that time only EB was left in that livery *-)

cheers

They did breifly put some stood down Vanguards back into service during the fuel crisis.

My guess is that it might have had the logos painted out on retirement and the later logos were added on return

My other theory is that perhaps it was just an apprentice paint practice.

I have never seen anything about this and coming across a single pic is all I know.

I'm sure the light ring was just new nose cones added for the military tests already in the FJ livery.

It looks white against the black but when I saw them they looked the same light grey close up as FJ.

AFAIK.. the brief respite from the breakers yard (due to the oil crisis) came in the winter of '72/'73 and by that time, the only pax Vanguards not already gone were EI, EH, ER and EU. EA, EB and ED were already doomed and were gone by early '73. I've tried to find the shot of 'EB wearing RS/FJ but it must be on the old(er) pc as I can't find it here. I'll have a look tomorrow and see if I can get any dating info off it ;)

Hi Dave

The pic you have is the same one as me .I sent it to you

The date will be easy as it was along side G-APEI in Silver City livery which off the top of my head I think was Autumnish 1973.

Everything is packed away here but the date of the abortive lease to SCA of 'EI will give it.

Forgot about the Vanguard Site

G-APEI lease was October 1973 and G-APEB was down as broken up in June 1973 so that doesn't tie up at all.
