The smoke its trailing caught my eye - I thought the JT8Ds were cleaner than that. Even in my lifetime I flew on a few 727s powered by basically the same engines and I don't remember the aircraft being that smokey! :S

-7s and -9s were smoky......plus although it seems trite to say -- refining has improved somewhat since the 1960s -- for the comment about "long bodies" its a -30 by the looks of things
the MD80 with jt8D-219s is still smoky even today

I can remember once suggesting that an Aviogenex ( or was it JAT ? - Yugoslavian anyway ) DC9 which I was following had problems , because one engine in particular was belching smoke , and being firmly put in my place ! Some seemed to be smokier than others

I remember a Sterling Caravelle 10B that would put an early 707 to shame.

Yet the other Caravelles I saw we no smokier than One-Elevens. The Sterling was even belching thick black on approach.

We used to get an Aer Turas DC8 into liverpool on cargo runs. You knew when it was on approach because of the trail of smoke behind it

Applies to trains as well as planes. *Fondly remembers clag-spewing class 37's and the like *
