Die-Cast Models

Gents,

I'm thinking of getting a model of the DH106 or 1-11 for my desk. For the Comet it seems the choices are limited to (if you can get one) the Corgi Classic Avaiation series, or the 1:400 Aero Classics. The 1-11 has a bit more scope, with Gemini Jets and Aero Classics producing a 1:400 version (Can't see me getting a 1:200 Small World past SWMBO!)

Does anyone have any experience/knowledge of any/all of these or have other recommendations?

Corgi have a world of information available to them but still manage to miss the mark as far as accuracy goes. I look up at my BEA RS Comet and shudder every time I look at the fin The Gemini Jets models show incredible detail for the size of them but.. they're incredibly small. This may turn out to be an advantage as you can sneak a couple onto your desktop without causing too much alarm If your desktop is already cluttered, these are an obvious choice. A little pricey perhaps but great looking models. I can't afford anything above 1:400!
There is a company out there doing 1:500 models called www.inflight500.com and their models are cheaper than Gemini. I have a BEA FJ Viscount from them and it's a nice little model

I had my eye on the Corgi BOAC Comet but had concerns from the photo about the finish, in particular the way the cockpit windows seem to be painted on? - so your comment about the fin has confirmed my suspicions.

Thanks for the link to Inflight - I hadn't been able to find actual photos of their models so will trot over there and have a look.

Yup.. that fin makes me want to scream. Where the hell they got the drawing from for it I don't know At a guess.. I'd say it was pinched from a 1950's American jet fighter

I came across inflight a few years ago at Duxford and was impressed by a) the range of models they had and b) the price. That said, I've seen a selection of their Viscounts for sale in the Brooklands shop and the price had been suitably ramped up Missing from my collection and something I'd like more than any other is a Vanguard. These (apparently) came onto the market and were immediately sold. Some places managed to get a second shipment but these too flew straight from the 'in' box to the customer If you come across one on your travels, I'd appreciate a HU

I'm very fond of my Trident 3B by Gemini Jets...I see it is a limited edition of 600 pieces...It may be a little small for your desk as its scale is 1:400

Mine is number 105/600 and it is of course the one at Manchester G-AWZK

I don't know if it helps but I have some photos of Jet-X, Gemini and Corgi models (and others) on my website here: http://www.vc10.net/Misc/vc10_models.html
They're all VC10 models of course but it may give you an idea of the sort of quality you can expect. From my point of view the Gemini models look very good as do the Jet-X ones. I'd advise to stay away from JC Wings but Corgi models can be quite nice, the quality can differ quite a bit though. The BOAC and BA VC10s that I've got are great but the RAF K2 has some silly mistakes.
