A Real Treat...

Post by petermcleland »

Dinga Bell just sent me this and I thought I would share it:-

"Now here is a real treat. Watch the video, sound on loud to hear the Merlin engines. Full screen by clicking on the square with 4 arrows in the lower right corner of the video.
Enjoy

WOW!!!! although no sound on our computers I could literally imagine the wonderful sounds of all those Merlins Peter, at least I was able to view the video and realise what I had missed by not going!!

Watching the formation of Spits passing one could just imagine that it was 70 years ago and they were off on a scramble!! Many thanks for that, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Now back to work!!

Regards
Nigel.

Great video and sound.

You guys may not know the answer, so no biggie if you don't. :) - Does anyone know why they're flying a Diamond 4 instead of a Finger 4 as would be "era appropriate"? The Diamond 4 is much harder to hold and it doesn't really make things any more "photogenic", so I'm not sure why it seems like everyone is so enamored with it.

Hi Chris..

I don't know the real answer to this but this is how they always fly 'en Mass' at Duxford. The mid season 'Flying Legends' display (generally aircraft up to the end of WWII) always ends with a balbo containing all aircraft that remain serviceable and can keep up and from memory, the flypast is diamond 4's and multiples thereof. There are exceptions of course.. you can't have a diamond 4 with 2 Mitchell's but you get the idea ;)

Diamond Four or "Box" is much easier than "Finger Four" as each of the three formators is formating on the leader...In Finger Four the number four is formating on a wingman, who is already formating on the leader :agree:
