Hi Peter it could be but a lot of that series is computer coloured B&W footage made to look like contemporary stock :dunno:

The US did shoot quite a bit of colour but it's hard to tell the genuine stuff form the computer fakes. The series is, or has been in the last few few weeks shown on Satelite TV.

Not really Gary...I'm assured that it is genuine very expensive colour film:-

"16mm colour (not "colorized") footage
of carrier action in the Pacific.
Not many colour shots in the '40's - extremely
expensive then, with a complicated and exacting
processing process."

Edit...I must admit that the air to air and air to sea Combat sequences must probably be colourised :agree:

Hi Pete

Thanks :)

There is as I mentioned quite a bit of genuine stuff about but I wish they would clearly seperate them :)

I use to look in awe at WW II colour now, I'm afraid I look with suspicion :worried: :(

"The Second World War in Colour" uses a lot of colourized film, but "WWII in Color" does not. When no color film of a subject was available, they used B&W. It's easy to get the two specials/series mixed up.

I have to say that I think that the modern technique of colourising old b&w WW2 footage is impressive. In the case this particular footage,I would guess that most,if not all of it,is original colour film.I wonder how many of those young men survived the war. :) EricT

I agree , it's much better watching the baddies get kilt in living colour.

Hi Guys,

Thats some great footage and where i have seen a lot of it before at different times i can't believe how lucky those guys were near the end of the film just managing to get in the doorway as that plane breaks in half!

Cheers,

Roger.

Very good, real colour film really brings it to life. Even the colourised WWI footage turns perceived dull and overcast days into sunny days, which were never apparent before despite the obvious dark shadows that you never noticed when it was B&W.

I also remember watching George Steven's colour film of D-Day to Berlin that the BBC showed a few years ago and I have a copy of, although the copy is different to the version shown by the BBC as songs sung during the meeting of the US & Soviet troops are different to what I remember.

Trouble with the colourised stuff is that it might not be right.

If seen some stuff that is definitely iffy.....but just could be right
